18 November 2024, Cairo.

Young architecture students and professionals gathered for an engaging session hosted by the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), where the focus was on creating streets and public spaces that prioritize children’s health and well-being. The session not only encouraged attendees to reflect on the impact of the built environment on young lives but also equipped them with practical tools and resources to make a difference.

Key Highlights

  • Hands-On Learning: Participants explored innovative tools like the reverse periscope, a simple cardboard-and-mirrors device that allows adults to experience the world from a child’s perspective. By seeing streets from a child’s height, attendees gained unique insights into hazards, sightlines, and the hidden wonders of navigating environments designed for taller people.
  • Practical Resources: Students were introduced to two key guides:
    • How to Engage Kids in Street Design: A toolkit for involving children in the design process and making their voices a central part of urban planning.
    • How to Evaluate Street Transformations Near Schools: A guide to assessing the long-term impact of street design projects near schools to champion safer and more joyful urban spaces.

Creative Inspiration

The session sparked creativity among attendees, many of whom shared drawings of their “dream streets.” These visions included features like bike lanes, additional greenery, benches, and dedicated play areas for children. The interactive session encouraged participants to think about how inclusive design can shape healthier, more vibrant communities.

This GDCI session highlighted the transformative potential of streets designed with children in mind. As these young architects head into their future careers, they are now equipped with the tools and inspiration to create inclusive public spaces that prioritize safety, health, and joy for the next generation.
