23 November 2024, Cairo. – At the heart of WUF12, the launch of a special edition of the Journal of Public Space—Young Gamechangers: Amplifying Youth Voices for Healthier Public Spaces—was a moment of reflection and celebration. This edition was conceived with a vision: to understand and amplify how youth voices can shape the future of urban environments. With increasing recognition of young people’s transformative potential in public space design, health, governance, and technology, the journal aimed to provide a platform that celebrates and critically examines their impact.
This journey began with a global call for submissions, seeking insights, narratives, and innovative practices spotlighting youth-led contributions. The overwhelming response—over 160 submissions worldwide—underscored the urgency and enthusiasm for youth-driven urban transformation. After a rigorous selection process, the final curated issue featured 7 research articles, 7 case studies, and various creative works, including visual essays from emerging young authors. These pieces collectively highlight youth’s role in fostering community well-being through public spaces, bridging governance gaps, and leveraging digital tools to reshape urban landscapes.
The launch event “Shaping the public space discourse with unheard, marginalized and young scholars” in the Urban Library was a testament to this collective effort. Dr. Cherie Enns, the guest editor, set the tone by outlining the issue’s intent, outcomes and meticulous development process. The Author, Anne-Sophie Spinaci, presented one of the most celebrated papers in the journal “Play for All: Towards Inclusive Public Space for Young Women in Cairo”. This case study showcased the role of social media and active play for women in improving safety, well-being and urban health in cities.
What we learned?
The process of launching this challenge was not merely about collecting submissions but also about deeply understanding the issues that resonate with young scholars and the challenges youth face in urban environments. Through this initiative, we gained valuable insights into the priorities and concerns of young people, from their desire to shape inclusive public spaces to their innovative use of technology for community well-being. The process helped us identify common themes, such as the importance of mental health, access to opportunities, and the role of participatory governance in fostering a sense of belonging.
- Balancing Physical and Digital Spaces
Submissions revealed a growing emphasis on integrating digital tools like QR codes, interactive apps, and social media into public spaces. These tools provide opportunities for skill-building, employability, and creative expression. However, it is essential to balance digital engagement with physical activity to promote holistic well-being and avoid the risks of sedentary behaviour. - Public Spaces as Catalysts for Health and Well-being
Public spaces play a vital role in enhancing health and well-being, especially for vulnerable or displaced youth. In many case studies, co-designed, nature-based spaces and youth-led urban interventions were highlighted as transformative in fostering healthier and more inclusive communities. - Youth as Gamechangers in Urban Design
The submissions underscored how young people are stepping up as active contributors to urban design and governance. They bring innovative approaches and valuable insights to public space design, even in the face of systemic challenges. Their efforts are reshaping public spaces and promoting healthier lifestyles while calling for recognition and inclusion in decision-making processes.
Looking Ahead
This special issue is not just a collection of articles—it is a call to action, encouraging cities, governments, and organisations to prioritise youth engagement in the planning and designing of healthier, more inclusive, and vibrant public spaces. But also to listen to young scholars and value their perspectives and research. As we celebrate this milestone at WUF12, we hope to continue building momentum and scaling the insights and practices featured in Young Gamechangers, shaping cities where everyone thrives.
